Sculptra

The reason your face suddenly looks older isn’t just because of a single visible wrinkle. As collagen in the skin decreases and the volume of fat and bone diminishes, the very structure that supports the face changes.

Sculptra is not a filler that instantly adds volume; rather, it is a collagen stimulator that encourages the skin to produce its own collagen. Once the PLLA particles—its main ingredient—settle into the dermis and subcutaneous layers, they stimulate the production of the body’s own collagen in the surrounding area.

So things don't change overnight. Instead , the effects build up gradually over several weeks, and the changes last a long time.

About Sculptra

How does PLLA, the main ingredient in Sculptra (
), work within the skin?

PLLA-SCA particles
01

What is PLLA?

The main ingredient in Sculptra is PLLA, or poly-L-lactic acid. This substance is also used in surgical sutures, and it is absorbed by the body through biodegradation. Since it is insoluble in water, when mixed with injection water, it forms a suspension that does not settle.

The PLLA in Sculptra is called PLLA-SCA. Because the particle size is irregular within a certain range and the surface is rough, the particles remain at the injection site and provide a sustained, varied stimulus.

The Collagen Production Process
02

We make it without adding collagen.

When PLLA particles become embedded in the tissue, macrophages gather around them, and some fuse together to form multinucleated giant cells. Signaling molecules released during this process activate fibroblasts, and over the following weeks, new collagen production gradually increases.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which use a foreign substance to fill the area, Sculptra creates volume using collagen produced by your own body. Rather than replacing one another, the two treatments complement each other.

03

Collagen fills the space left by the particles.

Three months after the Sculptra treatment, collagen in the skin increased by 66%. The PLLA particles gradually break down over 8 to 24 months, and by 30 months, collagen had filled the spaces where the particles had been.

Based on Goldberg D, et al. Dermatol Surg. 2013 / Vleggaar D. Dermatol Surg. 2005. The breakdown of results is based on citations from the papers and histological findings; therefore, there may be differences from the actual procedure, and results and outcomes may vary from person to person.

How It Works

How Sculptra Works

1

Inject the hydrated Sculptra evenly into the dermis and
subcutaneous layer

Phase 1 InjectionEpidermisDermisSubcutaneous layerOn the day of the procedure
2

The moisture is absorbed within a few days, and collagen fibers form around the remaining particles

Stage 2 Collagen ProductionEpidermisDermisSubcutaneous layerOrder Receipt - Several Months
3

PLLA breaks down and disappears, and
the newly formed collagen remains in its place.

Treatment Areas

Sculptra Treatment Areas

The amount of volume lost varies by area.
We divide the layers and volume and inject them evenly.

Sculptra Treatment Areas
Cheekbone
Nasolabial Folds
Front ball
Cheek
Marionette

There are certain areas where Sculptra should not be injected. The skin under the eyes, on the eyelids, around the eyes, on the tear troughs, on the philtrum, on the lips and lip lines, on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and on the nose is thin, making nodules easily noticeable. We recommend alternative treatments for these areas.

Sculptra serves a different purpose than hyaluronic acid fillers.
Fillers add external material to create immediate volume at the injection site, but they disappear after several months; Sculptra, on the other hand, stimulates the growth of your own collagen, resulting in gradual changes over a period of 25 months.

Recommended For

We recommend this to people like this

People whose faces look gaunt even though their body weight hasn't changed

For those who feel hesitant about getting dermal filler treatments

People whose entire face appears sunken and shadowed

For those who would rather see gradual improvement—
—rather than making a sudden change

Not only the results, but also the difference in experience

Why It's Different

Every process has its own unique reason.

Volume Analysis

We analyze the areas of the face that currently appear sunken and
plan the injection volume for each area before proceeding.

Online Treatment Report

Since collagen is produced slowly over several weeks, it’s difficult to notice changes in your face, which you see every day. We record the products used, the treatment areas for each session, and the injection volume in an online report to assess the effectiveness of Sculptra.

Notice

Please follow these guidelines after your procedure.

  • 1

The volume immediately after the procedure is due to the injection solution used for hydration. As the moisture is absorbed over the course of a few days, it may feel as though the volume is decreasing, but this is a normal process.

  • 2

For 5 days after the procedure, massage the area 5 times a day for 5 minutes each time. To minimize irritation, apply cream first, then massage in circular motions, focusing on the treated area, using enough pressure to feel it clearly.

  • 3

Sculptra is a treatment typically performed 3 to 4 times at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks. Collagen gradually increases over the weeks following each treatment and accumulates with each subsequent session.

  • 4

Apply a cold compress to the treated area. Wrap the ice in a towel or similar material to prevent it from coming into direct contact with your skin.

  • 5

Please avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 24 hours after the procedure. Doing so may cause swelling and bruising to worsen.

  • 6

Swelling usually subsides within 2–3 days, and bruising usually subsides within 1–2 weeks. You can cover the injection marks with makeup starting the next day.

  • 7

If you notice any lumps, persistent pain, or redness at the treatment site, please contact the hospital. While these symptoms usually improve with observation, they require medical evaluation.
